When I lost my mum to breast cancer (11 years ago this March) creative block seemed to be a symptom of my grief. Creating had always been my happy place, and it was like I’d forgotten how to enjoy it without being able to call and tell her about it.
I’ve since learned, through creativity coaching, that we tell ourselves things that become obstacles to creating and we can just as easily (with a little guidance) tell ourselves a more positive story, if we choose to.
For this painting, I set out to paint intuitively, for enjoyment (and yes, I hoped to have a product at the end of it). However at the end of my painting session it wasn’t quite where I wanted it to be, so I set it aside.
The next morning when I looked at it, I turned it upside down and it was clear to me that this was a strong female form, her figure just emerged from the painting and I had to outline her in gold.
Isn’t it often the case that something in life turns us upside down and a ‘fighting spirit’ emerges.
The original ‘Fighting Spirit’ is available and 15% goes to Breast Cancer Now. I can also provide hand embellished prints, on demand.
I’ve made it my mission to help other’s like me reawaken their creativity. I’m looking for 5 women to join Creative Action Takers a small, upbuilding group, for 8 weeks of creative coaching, support & community! DM on Instagram @petal_and_sunray to enquire. Special offer for followers of the Breast Cancer Art Project!
