La Femme du Voile

by Sue Olivera & Alvin J. Báez (photographer)

Alvin Báez, the photographer, explains the photo:

The Woman of the Veil

“In the picture I present Susan, a breast cancer survivor. After having fought for eight years against the disease, she opted to remove her breasts. In this photo she presents herself after that cruel battle – half naked, before the world in a defiant way, showing the scar that cost her so much. She is the only living being in a desolate, depressing and dark world, dramatizing a thorny path full of triumphs and failures for which she had to walk, but finally manages to overcome, leaving behind her fears and regaining control of what was her life. Susan exemplifies a dignified woman, a fighter and imposing, who like thousands of women who annually suffer from this disease, fights that evil to the death.
