Back to Front

By Adriana ESF

“This photograph is an almost abstract negative of my LD Flap reconstruction – where a muscle and piece of skin from my back was taken to create the new breast. The photo was taken three weeks after surgery and shows the skin graft very clearly. The negative plays on the idea of opposites – my back being used to recreate my front. It almost creates an impression of an x-ray, representative of the many scans I’ve had over the last 15 months.  I do not yet have the confidence to share an original image, knowing family, friends, colleagues may view it – the distortion of the image almost removes it from reality. Sometimes (actually often) I feel the whole thing is somewhat unreal. But I am learning to accept my new reality, and love my new ‘Back to Front’ breast.”
